Cuttack: The glamour girl of yesteryears and veteran Odia actress Gloria Mohanty passed away at a private nursing home here late last night at the age of 83 after a protracted illness.

As the news spread, almost everyone from the Odia film industry reached her residence and offered floral tributes to her mortal remains as a mark of their last respect to the doyen.

Born on June 27, 1932, at Matha Sahi in Tulasipur area of the city, Mohanty began her career as an accredited singer with Akashvani Kendra here. She later shifted to acting and played different roles in more than 100 Ollywood movies.

Noted among them are ‘Jagannath’, ‘Kedar Gouri’, ‘Maa’, ‘Taapoi’, ‘Tapasya’, ‘Janani’ and ‘Shashughar Chalijibi’. Her role as Lalita in her debut movie ‘Jagannath’ had brought her immense popularity among the cine-lovers.

She was given the Best Actress award by Prajatantra Prachar Samiti in 1952, the Sangeet Natak Akademy award and Jaydev Samman in 1992 and Guru Kelucharan Samman in 2011.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has expressed his deep condolences in Mohanty’s demise.
