Vegetable farmer commits suicide over debt, crop damage
Cuttack: A vegetable farmer allegedly committed suicide after he failed to repay loan taken from private lenders in Dampada block under Banki in Cuttack district. The farmer identified as Chaitanya Parida of Kushapangi village had also suffered crop damage in the current winter season.
According to sources, after consuming pesticide on December 21, Parida was taken to Banki hospital and then shifted to Cuttack SCB Medical College & Hospital in critical condition. Later, his family members shifted him to a private hospital.
However, the family could not afford the treatment further and took Chaitanya back to the village where his condition worsened further and he had to be admitted again to Banki hospital. Subsequently, Chaitanya died during treatment.
Following his death, family members of Chaitanya alleged that he took the extreme step over loan burden.
“His (Chaitanya’s) crops were damaged in last year’s cyclone. He had taken some private loan and planted vegetables. However, the crops were damaged. Frustrated over it, he consumed pesticide in the field,” said Bipin Nayak, a relative of the farmer.
After recovering the body, Banki police sent the body for post-mortem. Meanwhile, administrative officials were not available for comments on the farmer’s death.
