Vedanta unrest: Situation limping back to normalcy

Lanjigarh: Situation at the Vedanta refinery at Lanjigarh returned to normalcy today following a meeting between security personnel and labourers in the presence of Kalahandi SP, B Gangadhar late on Saturday.

At least two persons including security personnel of Odisha Industrial Security Force (OISF) were killed while 30 others injured in the violent clash between security personnel and labourers yesterday.

Noted social activist Prafulla Samantaray today demanded that a murder case should be registered against Vedanta management while the company should also pay compensation to those killed in the violence.

Besides, adequate compensation under 2013 Land Acquisition Act should also be provided to the people of two villages affected by pollution, Samantaray added.

Earlier, talks were held between the labourers and security personnel in the presence of Kalahandi SP B Gangadhar. The senior officials announced a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the next kin of the deceased.

It is pertinent to mention here that large-scale violence was reported following a fierce clash between labourers and security personnel deployed at Vedanta plant at Lanjigarh yesterday.

The labourers reportedly were staging a demonstration over several demands including jobs when the security personnel allegedly used baton to disperse them. Later, the demonstrators ransacked property at the plant.

Following the incident, the district administration had to clamp prohibitory orders under Section 144 in front of the factory’s main gate.
