According to The New Indian Express, in a letter addressed to Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, Agarwal said the company was committed to developing a 30 lakh tonnes per annum (MTPA) aluminium ecosystem in the state.

The proposal includes a 3 MTPA smelter at Dhenkanal with an investment of Rs 1.27 lakh crore and a 6 MTPA alumina refinery at Rayagada with Rs 1 lakh crore. Reports added that the company has already secured the Sijimali bauxite block through auction, which will serve as a key raw material source for the project.

Agarwal has also informed CM Majhi that he would visit Bhubaneswar before Diwali, accompanied by his senior management team, to discuss the next phase of implementation. He has also proposed a joint press interaction involving international media to highlight Odisha’s leadership in industrial transformation and sustainable resource-based growth.

Meanwhile, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja held a preparatory meeting earlier this week with officials from the Steel and Mines Department, Odisha Mining Corporation, and other departments to review the progress of Vedanta’s projects ahead of Agarwal’s scheduled visit.

Project Promises Massive Economic Impact

Vedanta’s aluminium expansion plan is projected to generate up to two lakh jobs, both directly and indirectly, according to company estimates shared at the ALUMEX India 2025 event in New Delhi. The proposed smelter at Dhenkanal is designed as a ‘green aluminium’ facility, using cleaner technology to minimise emissions.

Further, Vedanta CEO had earlier confirmed that land acquisition for the Dhenkanal site is progressing smoothly and that the plant should be ready in less than five years.

With its upcoming smelter, refinery, and aluminium park projects in Dhenkanal, Rayagada, and Jharsuguda, Vedanta aims to double its total aluminium capacity from 3 to 6 MTPA, positioning Odisha as the nucleus of India’s aluminium industry.
