Jharsuguda: An worker of Vedanta Aluminium Limited in Jharsuguda was killed allegedly after being crushed between the engine and bogie during coupling of a train in the railway siding of the plant on Tuesday.

The worker, identified as Mumtaz Khan, was coupling the train engine and another bogie when he accidentally fell between them and was crushed.

Mumtaz was admitted to a private hospital in Jharsuguda in critical condition, but as his health condition deteriorated, the doctors referred him to Burla hospital. He breathed his last while being transferred to Burla hospital.

Following the incident, other workers at the plant staged a dharna in front of the gate number 1 of the plant and demanded compensation for the family of the deceased.

"We rushed him to the hospital's first aid centre but since there was no doctor there, a dresser checked the pulse and asked us to admit him to the private hospital. The doctors at the private hospital referred him for Burla after fitting emergency kit on his body," said MG Rao, a worker of the plant.

A team of district police led by additional SP Sushil Kumar Panigrahy reached the spot to pacify the irate workers. Comments from Vedanta authorities could not be obtained in the matter.
