US engineer held at city airport, bullets seized
Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate police on Wednesday arrested an American engineer at the Biju Patnaik airport here on charges of carrying live bullets.
Police said, William Michel, an engineer of a US-based company, arrived in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday evening and stayed at a private hotel in the city. He was about to leave for Paradip today by a special chartered flight.
The airport security personnel frisked him before he boarded the flight at around 8.30 am today. Incidentally they traced eight 0.22mm bullets in his luggage and informed the local police when Michel failed to give satisfactory reply on the possession of bullets.
The cops immediately took the foreign citizen to the police station and seized the bullets. They are questioning him to elicit more information on this and why he was going to Paradip. Police said, details about the foreign citizen will be ascertained only after interrogation.
Meanwhile Michel has pleaded ignorance before the officials.
“I have no bad intentions and I have made a mistake. Actually I forgot and this was inside my bag,” he told OTV.
“I am sorry I forgot…I have made all the way here via Holland, and also Delhi and the bag was checked by Customs,” he claimed.
Now the revelation of the foreign national that the bag was checked by customs officials at Delhi airport has left the police in a tizzy for how the bag survived the customs check.
"William is being interrogated and would be forwarded to court soon. His travel documents are also being examined," Deputy Commissioner of Police Nitinjeet Singh said.
US diplomatic mission has been informed about arrest of William, held under provisions of Arms Act, police said.
