Unsafe buildings raise alarm in Cuttack, Orissa HC questions delay in demolition

The Orissa High Court has expressed serious concern over unsafe buildings across Cuttack city, asking why dangerous structures have not yet been demolished despite multiple warnings. The court’s remarks came while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) related to civic issues in the city, triggered by the recent collapse of a balcony at Manisahu Chhak that put residents on edge.

High Court Seeks Answers on Unsafe Structures

During the hearing, the High Court questioned the administration on the delay in pulling down hazardous buildings. Responding to the query, Cuttack Additional District Magistrate Shiva Shankar Tapo informed the court that 219 unsafe buildings have been identified across the city. He assured the bench that demolition drives would begin soon to eliminate any potential threats to life and property.

The court stressed the urgency of the matter, noting that such structures pose a constant risk to thousands of residents living in densely populated neighbourhoods.

Baliyatra Waste Causes Displeasure

In addition to unsafe buildings, the High Court expressed dissatisfaction over the Cuttack Municipal Corporation’s handling of post-Bali Yatra waste. Even a week after the iconic festival concluded, large portions of the fairground remained littered with debris and waste materials.

The court sought a clear timeline for the complete clean-up. Appearing before the bench, CMC Commissioner Kirandeep Kaur assured that the entire ground would be cleared by 27 November, adding that teams were already working round the clock to finish the task.

The High Court’s stern observations have once again highlighted long-standing civic challenges in Cuttack, unsafe constructions and inadequate waste management. With firm directions now in place, citizens hope the administration will act swiftly to ensure public safety and restore cleanliness across the city.
