Berhampur: An under-trial prisoner was shot dead by two other inmates at Bhanjanagar special jail, about 80 km from here on Tuesday.

Jail superintendent Gobinda Chandra Sur said Kalia Swain (35), a double murder accused, was killed at around 4.30 pm by two other under-trials who managed to escape taking advantage of the confusion that followed the incident.

The incident took place when under-trial prisoners Manoj Pradhan and Bapi Mishra received a gun on the sly from one of their visitors and opened fire at the jail superintendent and other jail workers for seizing liquor from them in their cells earlier.

Swain, who was lodged in the jail since August last year, was standing near the spot and was hit by a bullet and killed, Sur said.

"Manoj Pradhan and Bapi Mishra had threatened me and my staff while we raided their cell on Monday. Today's incident might be a fallout," he said.

Pradhan and Mishra were, however, captured later by police near Bhanajanagar after an encounter with their gang.

At least two members of the gang were injured in the encounter, police said adding a third member of the gang managed to flee.

Ganjam Superintendent of Police Ashish Singh said the police also seized a revolver and several ammunitions from them.

There are 236 inmates in the special jail, Sur said.
