Koraput: Expressing concern over spurt in rape cases in Odisha, former Kendrapara MP Baijayant ‘Jay’ Panda today alleged that consumption of liquor is responsible for such a situation in the State. Panda’s statements came soon after he met the family of the woman today, who died while undergoing treatment after being gang raped at Siadimal in Koraput district a few days ago.

The victim was admitted to Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in the district in a critical condition after being allegedly gang raped by two miscreants on December 5. She died after battling with life at the hospital on December 20.

“It is an unfortunate incident that the woman died after she was brutally gang raped in the district. From Kunduli to Koraput and even Western Odisha, there has been a rise in the incidents of rape and other atrocities against women in the State,” said Panda.

Panda further alleged that the situation in Odisha was not as grim till sometime back but due to lack of stern and prompt action against the accused, there has been a 50 per cent rise in such crimes against women in the State.

“From every village to block, such atrocities are on the rise. I appeal to Odisha government to check liquor business. Moreover, in Odisha no action is being taken against the accused while forensic reports are tampered with. Odisha needs to be saved and it requires a change in governance,” Panda said while offering to support the education of the two children of the Koraput gang rape victim.
