Kendrapara: The mysterious death of buffaloes at Tarada village under Garadpur block in Kendrapara district has triggered panic among the livestock farmers of the village. Locals alleged that in the past one week at least 25 buffaloes were found dead.

Reports said, around 30 families residing in Tarada have domesticated over 500 buffaloes and earn their livelihood through livestock farming. However, the death of the animals has incurred them huge financial loss.

While cattle farmers have alleged governmental inaction despite repeated complaints, officials of the Animal Resource Development Department claimed that the animals are dying due to pneumonia therefore mass immunisation drive will be carried out to check the spread of the disease.

A villager of Tarada, Asmita Das alleged, “The disease is gradually infecting all buffaloes in the village and the animals are dying on daily basis. My four buffaloes have fallen ill and we are concerned as to how we will earn our livelihood if we lose them. I request the district administration to take steps to address the menace.”

Narrating about the circumstances of the animal deaths, villager Pradeep Das said, “The animals show signs of drooling first and then they die within 24 hours."

Chief District Veterinary Officer (CDVO) of Kendrapara, Prasanna Patnaik who visited the village after receiving information about the mass death of animals clarified, "The disease is suspected to be bacterial hemorrhagic septicaemia. Mass immunisation drive will be carried out and the spread of the disease will be brought under control within two days."
