Bhubaneswar: The Orissa High Court on Friday granted interim relief from arrest to Champak Gupta, brother of Rs 1800 crore Uliburu mining scam main accused Deepak Gupta.

Adjudicating over a writ petition filed by Champak, the court restrained the State Vigilance office from arresting the petitioner till October 7.

The court, on September 11, had extended the interim relief granted to the parents and wife of Deepak till September 16. Earlier, the HC had granted protection from arrest to Gupta's father Haricharan, mother Kantadevi and wife Neetu, all directors of M/s Deepak Steel and Power Ltd till September 11 and asked them to depose before the investigating agency.

Notably, Gupta's parents and wife were booked by the vigilance sleuths under several sections of Prevention of Corruption Act, Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, Forest Conservation Act.

Meanwhile, the special Vigilance court at Keonjhar remanded Deepak in judicial custody till September 26. The Vigilance sleuths had taken him on remand from September 5 to September 11.

The  main accused was arrested, on September 4, in connection with his involvement in illegal mining of iron ore to the tune of Rs 1,800 crore.
