Jajpur: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has further strengthened its urban base by capturing the Vyasnagar municipality on Saturday after winning 16 of 26 wards in the lone urban body where re-polling was conducted in two booths on Friday. Congress won nine seats while one ward fell in the folds of independent candidate. BJP failed to bag a single ward in the town.

The BJD which obtained a clear majority in 42 municipalities and NACs on Friday has cleared the deck to form council in Vyasnagar of the district.

The election date was rescheduled for booth no 32 and 33 of ward no 20 in Vyasnagar on the day of general polling following technical snag in EVMs. However, polling was conducted in other wards of the town on Thursday. The State Election Commission (SEC) decided to conduct the counting of votes a day after the general counting.

The ruling party emerged victorious in the ULB polls acquiring 42 urban bodies in a clear majority and remained ahead in two other towns. Crippled by the intra-party fighting, the State Congress won only 12 municipalities and NACs. The State BJP, which applied ‘Modi Magic’ to garner public support, was unable to bag a single town. However, the saffron party is expected to form council in Rairangpur NAC, where it is ahead of its two rivals, BJD and Congress.
