Odisha Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj said on Thursday that the State Government will launch week-long awareness programmes across colleges and universities. These programmes will include discussions, yoga sessions, physical fitness activities, and initiatives promoting nutritious food habits among students. The drive aims to curb substance abuse and promote healthy lifestyles within educational institutions.

Focus On Health, Nutrition And Monitoring

The Minister said, “As per the guidelines issued by the UGC and the government’s plans, it is essential to create awareness among students about keeping educational campuses free from substance abuse. We will conduct week-long programmes across various colleges and universities, focusing on discussions, yoga sessions, and the physical fitness of students. Guidelines for this have already been issued."

He further added, “We have instructed colleges and universities to appoint an Anti-Drug Officer. Additionally, we will focus on students’ meals, as many tend to skip them, which affects their health. Awareness programmes will also be organised on this aspect. One of the faculty members from the educational institutions will be assigned the responsibility to monitor and oversee the implementation of these measures.”

The State’s initiative, aligned with UGC’s directives, seeks to establish a healthy, disciplined, and substance-free atmosphere across all campuses in Odisha, sources said.
