Bhubaneswar: The University Grants Commission (UGC) is taking all measures to improve the quality of higher education and research in India, informed UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain on the sideline of the 93rd Annual General meeting of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) here on Saturday.
Jain said that UGC is drawing up a more comprehensive national framework for higher education sector with focus now exclusively on quality. Education has already been reached to the maximum and now initiatives are being taken to improve the quality of education in the country. Undergraduate courses have also been designed student-centric with more focus on learning, said Jain.
Speaking to OTV, he stressed on enhancing teachers’ role in the life of students and said, “There’s a Teacher induction programme and annual refresher programme for academic teachers so that they can learn how to guide students in proper direction and become role model for students. Apart from books’ education, students need to be sensitised about their responsibilities towards the country, environment, society, our culture, sustainability; and how to become a good citizen and human being,” he said.
Besides, there will be an orientation programme where in a single platform teachers can share their knowledge.
On research projects, Jain said that a new scheme for research named ‘STRIDE’ has been introduced for capacity building. He further said, “UGC will make a big funding for that; we need locally need based, socially relevant, nationally and globally important research and not something restricted to books or journals- it needs to be more meaningful. Hope, our research will be helpful for the society.”
On global ranking of Indian educational institutes, Jain said, “We are trying hard towards it. We are identifying good institutes and supporting them financially. Several IITs and universities of India are already in global ranking but its low, we are trying to be among the top 100 institutes in the world.”
On the increasing number of fake educational institutes in the country, Jain said that UGC is a responsible apex regulatory body and it is serious about the issue. “Whenever we get any such complaint, we get it registered and take appropriate actions,” he added.
