Berhampur: People hailing from Andhra Pradesh on Monday celebrated Ugadi - the Telugu New Year Day in Ganjam district with pomp and gaiety.

Ganjam, bordering Andhra Pradesh, has a sizeable population of Telugu speaking people. Their population is high in several places like Berhampur, Chhatrapur, Gopalpur and Chikiti towns.

Attired in their traditional best, they thronged temples and Andhra Bhasabibardhani Samajam to hear the Panchanga (Hindu calendar of the New Year), read out annual predictions from the almanac and to seek blessings.

Panchanga Sravanam (listening of annual predictions by astrologers) was one of the integral parts of celebration of the Ugadi, the Telugu speaking people said at Berhampur.

K.Narayan Rao, a Telugu language lecture in Khallikote Junior College here, was reading the Panchanga at Samajam.
