The Education Department has suspended two teachers following a physical altercation inside Kirba Primary School in Burla, Sambalpur district, that occurred in the presence of students. The action was taken after a video of the incident surfaced on social media, prompting authorities to take serious note of the matter.
The suspension orders were issued by the Dhankauda Block Education Officer based on an inquiry report submitted by the Additional Block Education Officer.
Incident Caught on Camera, Inquiry Launched
The incident took place on the 15th of this month and involved two women teachers, identified as Sharmishtha Pallai and Kasturi Jena. The altercation came to public attention after students recorded the clash on their mobile phones, allegedly at the instance of the teachers, and the footage subsequently went viral.
Officials said the dispute escalated into a physical confrontation inside the school premises. During the clash, one of the teachers reportedly sustained facial injuries and suffered bleeding after being struck.
Dispute Over Toilet Cleaning Led to Clash
According to sources, the argument originated from a disagreement over payment to a sweeper engaged for cleaning the school’s washrooms. What began as a minor issue reportedly escalated into violence, raising serious concerns as the incident unfolded in front of students.

Assistant Block Education Officer Ramesh Kumar Mishra said he was directed by senior officials to conduct a detailed investigation after the video emerged. He added that the inquiry would be completed shortly and a comprehensive report would be submitted to higher authorities for further action.
Officials Stress Discipline in Schools
The incident has sparked concern among parents and local residents. Education officials reiterated that maintaining discipline and ensuring a safe learning environment in schools is non-negotiable, and any form of misconduct will be dealt with strictly in accordance with rules.
