Bhubaneswar: Normal life was disrupted after Norwester stormed several parts of Odisha this afternoon resulting in the death of two women and large scale damage to trees and property.

Reports reaching here said a woman was killed in her sleep when the wall of a house fell on her at Chandura village in Jagatsinghpur district this afternoon. The deceased has been identified as Sandhyarani Swain.

In Mayurbhanj district, a woman was killed when lightning struck her during Norwester at Sialia village of Udala block in the afternoon. The deceased has been identified as Pramila Mahanta.

In Salepur block in Cuttack district, several trees were uprooted and thatched houses caved in due to Norwester.

Some parts of Khurda and Nayagarh district also experienced heavy rains and strong wind in the afternoon. There were reports of extensive damage in Bolagarh, Pichukuli, Deuli and Sanapadar areas. Vehicular traffic came to a standstill on Sunakhala-Dhalapathara road after trees fell on the road.

In the capital city, rain and strong wind lashed for about half an hour in the afternoon and again in the evening. Vehicular traffic was disrupted after a tree fell on the road near Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation office. Power supply has remained disrupted in Pokhariput area since afternoon.

People in Cuttack city witnessed dust storm at about 3 pm which was soon followed by heavy rain.

On the other hand, intense heat wave prevailed in interior Odisha today with temperature soaring to 40 degree Celsius and above in 12 places.

A Met release this evening said Bhawanipatna was the hottest place in the state today with 45.5 degrees Celsius each while temperature remained at 40 degrees and above in 11 places. They were: Bhubaneswar (40.2), Angul (41.1), Jharsuguda (44.2), Sambalpur (42.2), Sundargarh (43), Hirakud (44.1), Talcher (41.8), Balangir (43.5), Phulbani (40), Titlagarh (45) and Sonepur (42.7).
