Two panchayat functionaries threaten to quit in Jajpur

Jajpur: Two women Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) members in  Jajpur district have threatened to quit their posts alleging humiliation by the local administration and ruling BJD leaders.

These two PRI members are Mrunalini Sethy, Sarpanch and Jayanti Rout, Samiti member of Khaman Gram Panchayat of Korei block in Jajpur district.

They recently met the district collector along with a dozen of ward members of their panchayat to vent their grievances. They cited instances of maltreatment meted out to them allegedly by the block administration and the BJD leaders of their area and submitted a memorandum in this regard.

Initially, I was reluctant to contest the Panchayat elections. But, local BJD leaders persuaded me to contest. I contested and won with the support of BJD workers. But, after the elections, BJD leaders not only forgot us, but also did not invite us to any party or government functions, alleged Mrunalini Sethy, the Sarpanch.

I went to the chairperson of Korei block who is also a woman backed by BJD. But, she hardly came out to help to redress our grievance, she said.

The same statement was made by the Samiti member of the panchayat, Jayanti Rout alleging maltreatment by the block administration and the ruling BJD leaders though they got elected under BJD umbrella.

Sarpanch Sethy and I went to the Block Development Officer (BDO) of the block and apprised her of our maltreatment. But, the BDO also has been very apathetic to our problems and told there is no need to call us to any programmees and functions, Jayanti Rout said.

"We have no other choice but to leave the post under such a condition", she said.

District collector Anil Kumar Samal said the two PRI members accompanied by some ward members of their panchayat had met him at his office and informed him of their problems.

I have asked the Korei BDO to extend all cooperation to them, said the collector.
