Dhenkanal: Two female elephants have been found dead at separate places in Dhenkanal district during the last three days, official sources said on Saturday.

A female jumbo was found dead near Achanda village in Patapani reserve forest area on Saturday due to suspected diarrhoea, assistant conservator of forests (ACF), Dhenkanal, Biranchi Narayan Samal, said.

The elephant, aged about 25 years, had showed diarrhoeal symptoms for the last few days, he said.

In another incident, forest personnel had spotted the carcass of a female elephant, aged between 15 and 20 years, at Bimbori under Kandhera reserve forest limits on Thursday.

The nature of injuries on its body and the damage to nearby trees indicated that the jumbo might have died during a fight with another pachyderm over mating.

Samal ruled out the involvement of poachers in both the incidents.
