Two held in Mata Matha firing
The police claimed that the motive behind the incident was robbery.
One Somu alias Santosh Sahu (25) of Tinikonia Bagicha and his associate Vicky alias Abinash Sinha (26) of Sutahat area of the city were arrested yesterday by the Mangalabag police, Deputy Commissioner of Police S Praveen Kumar said.
A sophisticated pistol was also seized from the duo which is stated to be the weapon used in the offence, he said.
Somu and Vicky along with another accomplice had intercepted businessman Umed Chand Baruah and his son Vineet while they were returning home on December 12 night after closing their shop. While snatching a bag containing cash from Umed, the criminals had fired at them.
While Vineet died in the hospital on the night of the incident, his father is now recuperating at a private hospital in the city, police said.
The incident had sparked a resentment among the businessmen community of the city who had observed a bandh in protest against repeated attacks on the businessmen and also demanded immediate arrest of the criminals. The agitated businessmen had also approached the State DGP alleging breakdown of law and order in the State.
Somu was earlier involved in at least nine cases of robbery while at least five cases of robbery are now still pending against Vicky. Vicky worked as a salesman in a garment shop in Mata Matha, police added.
