"The animals might have migrated to the area from Rambha forests, where at least three herds of elephants, comprising 24 were camping since last three years," the DFO said. While local people alleged that two elephants wrecked havoc destroying standing crops including cashew, forest officials claimed no harm was caused to anyone.
In view of this, the authorities of the College of Fisheries instructed its students not to go outside the campus boundary. "We have instructed the students and hostel inmates not to venture outside the campus,"director of the college B K Rath said.
The DFO, however, said there was no cause of panic as forest and police personnel were guarding the movements of the elephants. "We have cordoned the area where the elephants are suspected to be camping and instructed the people not to go inside the same area,"inspector in charge (Gopalpur) A K Sethi said.
At least 20 forest persons, including the ranger and several policemen were deployed in the area to keep a watch on movements of the elephants. The forest officials advised the people not to disturb or harm the elephants.
