Keonjhar: Three elephants were killed after being hit by a speeding truck while crossing NH-20 near Balijodi under Ghatagaon forest range in the district late last night.

Reportedly, when a herd of elephants was crossing the national highway, the truck hit them. Following the mishap, the vehicle has skidded off the road. While two jumbos were killed on the spot, another sustained grievous injuries. Later the injured pachyderm succumbed to his injuries.

After receiving information, senior Forest officials reached the spot and began investigation.

"At around 2 am last night, the mishap occurred near Balijodi when a herd of 10 elephants were crossing the national highway. Two elephants were killed while another one injured in the accident. Efforts are on to provide treatment to the injured elephant," said Santosh Joshi, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Keonjhar.
