3 dead in Odisha after consuming mango kernel

Nabarangpur: Three persons died while another person is still critical and undergoing treatment after consuming mango kernel at Mainapadar village under Jharigaon block of the tribal dominated Nabarangpur district of Odisha today. As per sources, all the four belong to the same family.

Initially two persons died while the other two were rushed to Nabarangpur district headquarters hospital. However, later in the day another person died at the hospital while undergoing treatment.

“As per reports, the patients had consumed cakes from ground mango kernel powder on Monday. Despite suffering from nausea and diarrhoea, they stayed back at home. It was only after a 15-year-old girl in the family died that three others complaining of similar symptoms were rushed to the Jharigaon hospital and later referred them to DHH, Nabarangpur. However, one of them died on the way to the hospital,” Nabarangpur Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Sivarani Mishra had earlier said.

A special team of doctors was also rushed to Mainapadar village to take stock of the situation, Mishra had said.
Similar cases were reported in 2016 from Kashipur block of Rayagada district in which several villagers died after consuming gruel prepared from mango kernel. The incident had sparked state-wide outcry with political mudslinging.

Though the state government denied that the deaths were due to poisoning from kernel consumption, the Opposition political parties alleged that the government had failed to address starvation deaths.
