Tusker death in Athagarh: Poachers’ involvement suspected
Athagarh: The death of a tusker in Narsinghpur of Athagarh district is shrouded in mystery as primary investigation has hinted at involvement of poachers.
Divisional forest officer (DFO) of Athgarh, Sasmita Lenka today informed that “Primary investigation has revealed involvement of poachers or tusker mafia in the incident as injuries reflect that the tusker could have been fired at.”
“The possibility of fight with another tusker cannot be ruled out. The post-mortem report of the tusker will reveal more details behind the death”, the DFO revealed.
Earlier, locals had reported about an injured tusker roaming in the area. The Forest Department then traced the animal and had begun treatment. The tusker, however, was unable to feed and died on Wednesday. The tusks of the elephant are still intact.
“The poachers have become active in the area. Strategic programmes will be taken up to root out poachers from the Athagarh forest area. Strict action would be initiated against the poachers if they are found responsible for the incident,” Lenka informed.
