Tourism has emerged as a major focus area in the Union Budget 2026–27, with Odisha positioned to benefit significantly from new eco-tourism and regional connectivity initiatives. Recognising tourism as a key driver of employment and inclusive growth, the Centre has underlined its strong economic contribution—accounting for 5.22% of India’s GDP (total impact) and supporting 13.34% of total employment, according to the India Tourism Data Compendium 2025.

For Odisha, one of the standout announcements is the development of turtle trails along key nesting sites in coastal areas, aimed at promoting sustainable and biodiversity-based tourism. With Odisha being home to the world-famous Olive Ridley turtle nesting grounds at Gahirmatha and Rushikulya, the initiative is expected to strengthen the state’s eco-tourism profile while ensuring conservation-led development.

The Budget also places Odisha among the five Purvodaya states—alongside Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Andhra Pradesh—earmarked for focused tourism infrastructure development. One major tourism destination will be developed in each of these states under an integrated framework, aimed at accelerating regional growth.

Improved rail and regional connectivity, expansion of transport infrastructure, and the provision of 4,000 electric buses are expected to enhance accessibility to tourist destinations across Odisha. These measures are likely to boost visitor inflow, generate employment across hospitality, transport, and handicrafts sectors, and reinforce Odisha’s position as a leading cultural and eco-tourism hub in eastern India.
