Berhampur/ Rourkela/Puri: In separate incidents, at least nine persons were killed on Sunday including two football players who were struck by lightning in Rourkela.
 
According to sources, a lightning bolt struck the players during a match at Jalda stadium this afternoon, killing both on the spot and leaving fiver others injured. Though the players were rushed to the hospital, doctors declared them dead.
 
In a similar incident, three women were killed after being struck by lightning while working at an agricultural farm in Baliguali gram panchayat in Puri district.
The Sunday turned out to be more tragic with the death of two motorcyclists in Berhampur.
 
Eyewitnesses said, a speeding minibus going towards Berhampur hit a bike from behind near the Chamakhandi square killing motorist Hadibandhu Majhi and the pillion rider Mitu Pradhan on the spot. Both the deceased, who were charred to death, belong to Kanamona area, a local said.
 
The impact of the bus-bike collision was so severe that both the vehicles caught fire within no time and burnt to ashes, before the onlookers could understand anything about the incident, they added.
 
Earlier in the day, two women died of asphyxia after falling into the sewage tank of their house in Berhampur under Tirtol block of Jagatsinghpur district. A family member, in a serious condition has been shifted to SCB Medical College Hospital at Cuttack while two neighbours were being treated at the government hospital at Raghunathpur.
