Bhubaneswar: At least nine persons were killed in separate road mishaps in Angul, Malkangiri, Koraput, Keonjhar and Balasore districts on Saturday.

In Angul, three persons were killed and two others sustained critical injuries after the car in which they were travelling collided head-on with a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction near Pitiri road on National Highway 149. All three died on the spot.

The mishap occurred in the wee hours today when the five were on their way from Khurda area to Rourkela. The identity of the deceased is yet to be established as the two persons, who have sustained critical injuries in the accident, are not in a position to share any details, police said.

In another freak road mishap reported from Malkangiri, three persons riding a motorcycle skidded off the road on Vijaywada-Ranchi corridor on NH 326 today. While two have succumbed to the injuries, the other has been critically injured in the accident. The deceased have been identified as Banamali Sikudu and Sanjay Sikudu.

In Koraput, two persons died after a two-wheeler collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw in Dakra village under Sadar police limits. While the biker was killed on the spot, one of the passengers travelling in the auto-rickshaw succumbed to injuries during treatment at hospital.

Similarly in Keonjhar, another biker was killed after being run over by an unknown vehicle near Rengalabada area.

Meanwhile in Balasore, a truck skidded of road and rammed into an electric pole near Barikpur resulting in death of one person. The deceased, Shekh Rababi, has been identified as a resident of Maharashtra. According to reports, Rababi was sitting near the electric pole when the speeding truck hit him. The driver is reportedly absconding while police have seized the truck and launched a probe in this connection.
