Tragedy at Chilika: Tourist swept away while bathing at Satapada

A tourist drowned while bathing in Chilika Lake at the popular Satapada tourist spot under the Brahmagiri block of Odisha’s Puri district on Sunday. The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the area and raised fresh concerns over tourist safety in the ecologically sensitive region.

According to reports, the mishap occurred near the Chilika mouth when the tourist, who had come to Satapada for sightseeing, entered the water to take a bath. Eyewitnesses said the tourist was suddenly caught in strong and unpredictable water currents in the area. 

Unable to maintain balance, the individual was swiftly swept away into deeper waters, leading to drowning.

Upon being alerted, personnel from the Fire Services Department rushed to the spot and immediately launched a search and rescue operation. After several hours of sustained efforts, the body of the deceased tourist was recovered from the Baghamunda coast. 

The identity of the tourist is yet to be officially confirmed, and police have initiated the necessary legal procedures.

Despite repeated warnings and safety advisories, tourists often venture into restricted or unsafe zones, putting their lives at risk. 

Local authorities have urged visitors to exercise extreme caution while visiting Chilika Lake and strictly adhere to safety guidelines issued by the administration. 

Tourists have been advised to avoid bathing in deep or restricted areas and to follow instructions from local officials and lifeguards to prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future.
