Bhubaneswar: Odisha Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera on Saturday informed that helmets will now be mandatory for pillion riders in the State. While talking to reporters, Behera categorically ruled out any possibility of reduction in fines under the Motor Vehicles Act.

“After the completion of three-month relaxation period, traffic rules under the Motor Vehicles Act will be strictly enforced. Helmets for pillion riders and seat belts for occupants in four-wheelers will be mandatory from March 1,” said Behera.

Though some States had suggested slashing the hefty fines, the Centre ruled out any type of reduction in penalties. However, the State has urged the Centre for more funds to reduce road accidents by 20 % in coming days, he said.

According to Behera, there is a proposal to deploy squads in every 30 kms to check traffic violations. The deployment of more personnel and regular drives will certainly ensure people comply with traffic rules, he added.
