Bhubaneswar: Taking cognizance of increasing number of deaths due to road accidents on the national highway-16 between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack in the last few days, the Traffic Commissionerate today identified five black spots and said that barricades will be put up on the designated places.

After a high level meeting, Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Traffic DCP Bijay Kumar Sahu informed that five places- Batabhuasuni temple near Janla, Aiginia, road near Siddharth Hotel, Acharya Vihar overbridge and Pahal-have been marked as black spots.

"We have decided to install barricades and put up insignias on the said areas for the first time on an experimental basis. Due to previous records of those areas, we have identified the spots but since there are also several other accident prone regions we will also subsequently mark them as black spots as well," said DCP Sahu.

As part of the plan to reduce speed of vehicles during the day, the Traffic Police will put up barricades from morning hours to 9 pm daily. Since plying of local vehicles reduces on the highway in the night hours, the road will be cleared off the barricades after 9 pm to allow unhindered movement of heavy vehicles.

After five persons were killed in separate road mishaps in Bhubaneswar within a span of three days, Twin City Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty had on Monday directed the traffic cops to regulate the speed of vehicles by using interceptors on the roads, wherever necessary.
