Berhampur: Tele-Ophthalmology Unit (TOU), a modern mobile eye treatment facility in rural areas, will soon start functioning in the eye department of MKCG Medical College and Hospital here.
 
An air-conditioned minibus, fitted with modern equipment to treat the patients, will move in rural areas. A trained technician, undergraduate medical students and doctors will be present in the bus to collect the data of the patients from rural areas.
 
The photograph and relevant data of the patients would be transmitted to the department online, while experts will advise treatment through video conferencing, said a senior doctor of the eye department.
 
The Central government has provided Rs 60-lakh for the project. The state government has agreed to bear the operational expenditure to run the project. The project, first of its kind was sanctioned under the National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB) and aimed to provide treatment at the doorstep in rural areas, the sources said.
 
The operational areas of the unit will be at least four southern Odisha districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal and Rayagada. The area of functioning would be expanded to further districts in southern Odisah depending upon the success of the pilot scheme, the sources said.
