Top Maoist leader Nikhil, wife Indu surrender in Odisha

In a significant development in Odisha’s fight against left-wing extremism, top Maoist leader Nikhil alias Niranjan Raut surrendered before the Rayagada police along with his wife Indu alias Ankita. The surrender marks a major breakthrough for the state’s security forces and administration.

According to police officials, a total of 15 Maoists laid down their arms, including Nikhil, who was considered a key Maoist operative in the region. Among those who surrendered are seven women cadres, highlighting the depth of Maoist infiltration and the growing impact of government rehabilitation efforts.

Approaching Government

Sources revealed that the Maoist couple had recently approached the government with four specific demands as a precondition for their surrender.

While details of the demands have not been officially disclosed, officials confirmed that sustained dialogue, combined with the state’s surrender and rehabilitation policy, played a crucial role in persuading them to rejoin the mainstream.

Setback For Maoists

Security agencies have described Nikhil’s surrender as a major setback for Maoist activities in southern Odisha, particularly in the Rayagada region, which has witnessed repeated incidents of left-wing extremism over the years. The surrender is expected to weaken Maoist networks and encourage other underground cadres to abandon violence.

Senior police officials stated that all surrendered Maoists will be rehabilitated as per government norms and provided with opportunities to start a new life. The Odisha government has reiterated its commitment to resolving the Maoist issue through a balanced approach of security operations, development initiatives, and rehabilitation, urging other extremists to surrender and choose the path of peace.
