Angul: Tiger census began on Wednesday at the Satkosia tiger reserve in Angul district. At least 45 units have been pressed into service for the counting of big cats on 965 sq km long patch of forest.

The counting is in progress at nine ranges under two forest divisions.

At least five units are conducting the operation in Tikarpada range while 14 units are engaged for the same in Purunakote range.

Similarly, 11 units of forest officials are counting the animals in Pampasar range and seven units have been engaged for the Raiguda range.

Likewise, the forest department has sent eight such units to conduct the operation in Jilinda forest range.

According to officials, at least two to three watchers led by a forest guard will work in each unit.

The operation will continue till May 10, officials added.
