Sambalpur: In an unfortunate incident, three women died five hours after delivering babies through Caesarean section at VSS medical college and hospital at Burla here today. Although the exact reason of the deaths is yet to be ascertained, doctors suspected side effects of medicine might cost dear for the lives of women.

Kalpana Mahakud (27)of Kanjibahal in Baragarh district was admitted to Burla hospital yesterday following labour pain. Assistant professor of gynecology Lalmohan Nayak and his team advised her to undergo a Caesarean and conducted the operation to get the baby delivered. Five hours after the delivery, Kalpana fell sick and died.

Similarly, other two pregnant women, one from Belpahar of Jharsuguda and another from Bheden of Baragarh district, also faced same fate after delivering their babies at the same place. Hospital sources said, nine pregnant women delivered babies through operation out of which six are safe.

"We had conducted surgery on nine women. The post-surgery condition of the women was all right. But, the condition of three women deteriorated suddenly after taking medicines. After a bout of severe vomiting, they foamed and died," said Lalmohan Nayak, assistant professor of gynaecology.

Meanwhile, Health minister Atnau Sabyasachi Nayak ordered DMET to visit the spot for investigation. Nayak said, a high level committee will be formed to investigate the matter soon.
