Bhubaneswar: Tension prevailed in Sambalpur University campus on Tuesday evening following the kidnap attempt of a girl student from a hostel. The irked students ransacked the police outpost located inside the campus and blocked NH-53 till late night.

Sources said, two bike-borne youths tried to kidnap one girl student of Narmada hostel in the evening while she was on her way to the hostel. They had allegedly gagged her and took her to a desolate spot behind the hostel.

However, she managed to escape from their clutches and ran to the hostel where she narrated the incident to her hostel mates.

Following the incident, hundreds of students marched to the police outpost inside the campus, ransacked it and set a scooter on fire before staging a blockade on National Highway-53.

The students called off the agitation after the Vice-Chancellor and senior police officials requested them to end their protest.

The parents of the girl refused to lodge a complaint with the police and left for their native village, said sources.
