Tension erupts during construction work of second bridge over Brahmani river
Rourkela: Local residents of Garjan village today created ruckus and stopped the construction work of second bridge over Brahmani river over inadequate compensation.
According to sources, the officials of the district administration, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and police personnel reached the village today to start the construction work. However, due to the protest launched by the villagers, the construction work had to be stopped.
Some of the villagers even alleged that land acquisition was not done in the area.
“We have not given permission for construction. No public hearing or land acquisition was done prior to the construction,” a local resident said.
Considering the tense situation, 3 platoons of police force were deployed in the village.
On the other hand, Lathikati Tehsildar, Manaswini Das said that the administration is trying to negotiate with the farmers.
“The villagers have been given compensation. The construction work has also been started; however, a few locals have raised objections. We have taken that into consideration and will be discussing the issue with the villagers.”
