Jajpur: At least ten people were on Wednesday killed and one was critically injured when a jeep carrying a marriage party dashed against a stationary truck on a highway in Jajpur district, police said.

The accident occurred when the jeep was returning from Chakua village in Sukinda area to Gadabandhagada village of Ramachandra Pur police station in neighbouring Keonjhar district. The jeep hit the truck from behind on NH-215 linking Jajpur and Keonjhar at a place under Korei police station, about 40 km from here, police said.

The victims were identified as Rajkishore Jena, Bibhu Prasad Nayak, Prabhat Nayak, Dibakar Nayak, Niranjan Patra, Smruti Ranjan Patra (between 22 yrs and 26 yrs), Brajendra Nayak (44) and Dayanidhi Nayak (65) of Gadabandhagada village and driver Subash Behera (23) of Patoli village and Chandu Mistry of West Bengal, Officer in-charge of Korei police station Pabitra Swain said.

The seriously injured was sent to SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack for treatment after first-aid at Jajpur Road Area Hospital. The bodies were sent for post-mortem and investigation is on.
