Teen Pregnancy In Odisha: Congress Demands CM To Table Findings By July 12

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Assembly once again witnessed an uproar as Congress leaders today created a ruckus in the House over the rising incidents of teen pregnancy in the State, especially the inmates of tribal girls' hostels.

Raising the recent issue of pregnancy of tribal girls in Bhubaneswar hostel, senior Congress legislator Narasingha Mishra during the Zero Hour urged CM Naveen Patnaik to ensure a fair probe into the incident.

Mishra said, "The officials are trying to suppress the matter while the girls have been sent back to their respective homes. Initial medical reports claimed that four girls have been tested positive. Surprisingly, three of them tested negative again after another check-up. An impartial and fair probe should be initiated."

Further, Mishra asked the CM to table the report of the findings in the House by July 12.

Pointing at the rising cases of atrocities and crime against women and girl children in the State, the senior leader criticised the State Government and questioned, "Is this 'Maa ku Samman' (Respect to women) by Naveen-led BJD government?"

It may be noted that the Speaker adjourned the House for 10 minutes after the Congress legislators rushed to the Well of the House and raised anti-government slogans.

Recently, three cases of positive pregnancy tests were found after health check up of 101 students of a tribal girls’ hostel in Bhubaneswar. A mobile health check up unit employed under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram performed the tests on the girl students on June 28 which revealed the results.

Following a probe, the Commisionerate Police has arrested an accused, who is a resident of Salia Sahi area in Bhubaneswar, informed city DCP on Monday.
