Sub-Collector Tulsi Das Markam was suspended on Saturday for allegedly watching the obscene dance performance of popular Jatra dancer Nisha Maharana while seated in the front row below the stage during the Banadurga jatra in Chhattisgarh.
The suspension comes after a video of Nisha’s performance went viral, triggering widespread criticism.
Investigation and Action Ordered
Following the viral video, the Gariabandh District Collector ordered a detailed probe into the matter. Earlier, 14 event organisers were arrested, and three police personnel who were allegedly enjoying the performance were suspended. Authorities have emphasised strict action against officials who neglect their duty or participate in inappropriate behaviour during public events.
Incident at Banadurga Jatra
The incident occurred on the 9th of last month, when Nisha Maharana performed an obscene item dance during the festival in Banadurga, Chhattisgarh. The video of the performance quickly circulated online, prompting the collector to intervene and ensure accountability.

The action against the sub-collector and police personnel underscores the administration’s zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct by public officials and highlights the importance of maintaining decorum during public events. Investigations are ongoing to determine if further action is required.
Anticipatory Bail
Meanwhile, Nisha Maharana has sought anticipatory bail from Orissa High Court after a complaint was lodged against her over the obscene dance. On the other hand, Nisha alleged that she did the obscene dance on the insistence of the event organisers.
