Bhubaneswar: Students aspiring to pursue higher studies at different universities of the State following completion of graduation are in quandary now due to overlapping of entrance exam dates for admission into post-graduation courses.
Reportedly, most of the varsities have fixed same date for conducting PG entrance test for same subjects. This has left the students perplexed, they are fearing that they might not be able to appear for the PG entrance test at the university of their choice.
On July 5, Utkal University and Ravenshaw University are conducting PG entrance test for Computer Science subject, whereas on July 6, Berhampur University and Ravenshaw University are holding the entrance exam for Physics. Similarly, Berhampur University, Ravenshaw University and North Orissa University have fixed July 6 as the entrance test date for Odia. Entrance test for English subject will be held at North Orissa University and Ravenshaw University on July 6.
For Botany, North Orissa University and Utkal University will organise entrance test on July 7 whereas Ravenshaw University and Berhampur University both are holding the test for Zoology on the same date.
Utkal University and North Orissa University are conducting entrance test for Geology subject on July 8.
Worried over the clash of dates, many students have raised questions on the decision of the State government to form the Higher Education Council. They asked if the Council exists, how come the PG entrance test dates of different universities clashed.
“If the PG entrance test is held on one date, there is a chance that students might suffer not being able to take part in the admission process of the university of their choice. Separate dates for the PG entrance exam will help a lot,” said Subhasmita Singh, a student.
A team of ABVP today met Governor Ganeshi Lal and apprised him about the issue.
“Exam date of different subjects is scheduled on a single date, so a student will be able to appear for the test at one university only. We met the Governor today in this connection,” said Sangeeta Panda, assistant secretary of ABVP.
On the other hand, authorities of different universities washed off their hands while feigning ignorance of the entrance exam schedule of other varsities.
“As a common admission test could not be held for PG admission at all varsities, our university will organise an entrance test for the same and accordingly the dates have been fixed. We have very less time to change the schedule of the entrance tests. But other universities can change their entrance test dates if they wish to do so,” said Rajendra Prasad Das, Vice Chancellor of Berhampur University.
Ashok Das, Registrar of Ravenshaw University said, “We had published the advertisement much earlier, so we have little scope for any change. Other universities should have taken note of the dates we had scheduled."
As there is no direction from the State government, all the universities are fixing date for entrance tests on their own, stated Sasmita Kar, chairperson of PG Council, North Orissa University.
Students have applied for admission into different PG courses in 16 universities in the State. Therefore, it is very likely that entrance tests overlapping will jeopardise their career growth path.
