Cuttack: A week after a low-intensity bomb exploded in a classroom in Ayatpur high school near here, the commissionerate police on Monday arrested one student in this connection. The accused has been sent to juvenile home in Berhampur after his bail plea was rejected by Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM).

Investigations have revealed that the student was allegedly carrying the crude bomb when he went to school on the fateful day on July 1. The bomb went off inadvertently at around 11 am while the students of Class-IX were settling down after the morning prayer. Of the 58 students present in the classroom, 22 were injured in the incident.

The accused had also suffered leg injuries and was undergoing treatment at the SCB medical college and hospital in Cuttack.

“According to preliminary investigations and statements of some students it was clear that the bomb was inside the bag of the accused. Since it’s not easy for a boy to procure a bomb, we are investigating on the source of the bomb,” said an investigating official.

In a related development, the school and mass education department on Monday revoked the suspension order of a teacher in this connection. The Cuttack district education officer on Friday had suspended Hindi teacher Panchanan Behera who was present in the classroom when the crude bomb exploded.
