Bhubaneswar: A violent melee between policemen and nearly 200 student Congress activists at the Congress Bhawan here on Monday left one havildar severely injured.

While some activists have been taken into preventive custody by the police, the condition of the havildar is reportedly stable.

In a bid to disperse the demonstrators, who sealed the busy Master Canteen square here for about two hours over alleged lathicharge on student Congress president Satyajit Pattnaik, police chased the activists. The action of the baton wielding police prompted the agitators who retaliated with pelting stones at the police and the vehicles nearby.

While some of the agitators fled the spot, many entered into the nearby Congress Bhawan. In the process some agitated workers caught hold of havildar major Nimai Charan Sahu inside the Congress Bhawan building and reportedly beat mercilessly.

“Finding me alone nearly 10-12 activists caught and beat me. I was crying in pain but in vain,” Sahu said who was later rescued by some security personnel.

Meanwhile the activists run amok and pelted stones at the city buses plying on the road. Nearly 10 passengers have been reportedly hurt in the incident, sources said.

Earlier the situation turned violent after a message ran thick and fast about the lathicharge of police on student Congress leader Patnaik, who was leading a student rally near Naveen Niwas demanding the arrest of ex-minister Raghunath Mohanty in alleged dowry torture case. As soon as the message spread over two hundred activists staged a road blockade at Master Canteen square leaving vehicles stranded on both side of the road.
