Stricter Enforcement Of Traffic Rules In Odisha From Today

Bhubaneswar: Think twice before hitting the roads at full throttle as stricter enforcement of traffic rules under the provisions of new Motor Vehicles Act resumed again in Odisha from today.

Several enforcing authorities including the State Transport Authority (STA), Odisha Police and Commissionerate Police had earlier made it clear that major traffic violations will attract hefty fines under the provisions of the new Motor Vehicles Act.

Even though Odisha government has given a relaxation of another three months so that people can obtain necessary documents including driving licence, pollution under control certificate, fitness and others,traffic violations will attract fines.

The traffic violations which will attract penalties includes- Driving at a speed exceeding the specified limit (over speeding), red light jumping, drunken driving, driving against flow of traffic, using mobile phone while driving, dangerous driving, triple riding on two wheeler, not wearing helmet, not wearing seat belt and overloading.

In case any vehicle user is found flouting any of the road safety provisions, the documents will also be checked, as per the latest notification issued by STA.

Senior officials of Commissionerate Police informed that CCTV cameras have been installed at every location to keep a track on violators and e-challans will be issued against the registration numbers. The cops have also installed a high-end automatic number plate reader machine at Rupali Chhak in Bhubaneswar.

In a bid to make people aware about the traffic rules, Commissionerate Police has also installed public address systems (PACs) at several important junctions- Rupali Square, Kalpana square, Airport square, Nicco park square, Kalinga Hospital square and Patia square in Bhubaneswar.

To detect and display speed on different roads, the Commissionerate Police has also installed Radar Speed Signs (RSS) at 10 locations in the city.
