Bhubaneswar/Vishakhapatnam: The 16-year-old Rayagada gang-rape victim was put on ventilator after her conditiion further worsened on Sunday with infection in her burn injuries spreading to more parts of the body, doctors at Care hospital in Vishakhapatnam where she is undergoing treatment said.

The doctors were trying to contain the infection from further spreading, Rayagada district Collector S S Padhi, who visited the Visakhapatnam hospital on Saturday, said.

"She is able to talk and identify people", Padhi said.

 
According to sources, her treatment is becoming progressively more difficult day by day.

Meanwhile, minister for tribal development, Lal Bihari Himirika who hails from Rayagada, also visited the girl.

To escape the social stigma, the minor, who hails from Anjipetta area had attempted suicide by setting herself ablaze the next day after she was allegedly gang-raped by four persons on the outskirts of Rayagada town on January 2.

With over 70 per cent burn injuries, the district administration shifted her to Care hospital in Vishakapatnam on January 7 for further treatment.

Police have so far arrested three accused in connection with the case.
