In a major drive against illegal tobacco sales, the Special Task Force (STF) conducted surprise raids in the Infocity area of Bhubaneswar on Monday. Acting on credible information, the STF targeted shops selling gutkha, pan masala, and cigarettes near educational institutions in clear violation of public health and anti-tobacco regulations.

What Happened During the Raid

Officials raided several shops operating close to schools and colleges. Large quantities of banned gutkha and flavoured tobacco products worth several lakhs of rupees were seized. The shopkeepers were fined on the spot, and some have been issued stern warnings for flouting state and national tobacco laws.

Shopkeepers Claim Ignorance

When questioned, a few shop owners claimed they were unaware that selling tobacco products near schools and hospitals is strictly prohibited under the COTPA Act.

"These people are destroying the students of educational institutions and colleges. Earlier, we said this surprise would continue, and today we have conducted surprise raids at shops nearby areas of KIIT University. So far, we have conducted raids at two shops and have seized large quantities of tobacco, and this raid will continue in the coming days," said Pradeep Raut, STF DSP
