Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate police is gearing up to launch the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) project on a pilot basis from mid January. This was informed by Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Prakash Mishra on the occasion of the 5th foundation day of Commissionerate police here on Wednesday.

“We’ll request Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to launch the pilot project on 12th January during the senior police officers’ conference here,” said Mishra.

“In first phase Kendrapada and Angul districts will be covered under the project,” added Mishra.

The central project is being undertaken to create a national database of crime and criminals for easy sharing of information across all police stations. Union Home Minister is likely to launch the project on January 4, the top cop said.

According to officials, the CCTNS will be used to track criminals, investigate crime, verify passports, record complaints of people and fingerprints of criminals. This will also help in the detection of culprits as well as control crime.

The system has been so designed that people can file complaints online instead of going to the police station, official sources said.

With the CCTNS system in place, all the police stations across India will be able to access information about anyone against whom an FIR is registered.
