Bhubaneswar: The searing heat waves continued to hold the state in a vice-like grip as mercury of the state capital touched 46.6 degree Celsius on Wednesday, throwing life out of gear completely. The temperature was so unbearable that all the roads wore a deserted look almost throughout the day, barring an option-less few.

Drivers of the auto rickshaws, mainly depending on the daily commuters for their daily bread and butter, also cursed the continuous spell of sunny days for their no-incomes. City bus conductors also corroborated similar opinion.

On Wednesday while temperature in Talcher recorded 46.6 deg Celsius, Sonepur boiled at 46 and Chandbali sizzled at 46.5 deg Celsius. Similarly Bolangir and Sundergarh recorded 45 deg Celsius while Titlagarh stroke 45.5.

Bhubaneswar on Tuesday incidentally marked the World Environment Day with temperature reaching 46.7 degree Celsius, breaking the 40-yr old record measured on May 22, 1972.

Similarly the residents of Balasore experienced the hottest sunny day on Tuesday with mercury reaching 46 deg Celsius, that broke the 10-year old record.

According to the local meteorological department, the state is likely to experience pre-monsoon shower after June 8. Though the South-West monsoon has hit Kerala on Tuesday, it will take few more days to reach Odisha, the weathermen said.
