Bhubaneswar : Amid the ongoing investigation by the vigilance department over adulteration of pulses in the mid-day meal scheme, it has come to the fore that the Centre had received complaint regarding this, much before and had ordered to take action prior to a detailed investigation.

On August 25, 2010, Central Women and Child Development department had written a letter which mentioned that rotten dal were supplied for the mid-day meal at schools in Gopa block of Puri. Hence the Centre had directed the state to investigate the matter and take immediate steps. It also asked the state government to submit a detailed report on the issue. But the state government took four months to order an enquiry into it.

Meanwhile, the opposition parties, demanding to unveil the culprit behind it said that the corruption is not a recent one but it prevails since last four years.

“What has come to the lime light now is only a small part of corruption and it is not of today but for last four years. The chief minister and the concerned minister are also well aware of it”, said Congress leader Ramakrushna Patnaik.

Suspecting that certain political leaders might be behind the scam, state president of BJP Mr. Jual Oram said, “The state government needs to go the root of the scam and bring all culprits, including the politicians involved, to book.”

However, going defensive, the women and child development department dismissed the charges and said that stern action will be taken against the culprits after the investigation is over.

“We conduct enquiries in several districts and direct the district collectors  for further checking. We also convene conferences of District Social Welfare Officers (DSWOs) to make them alert. So it would be wrong to say that we are silent”, said state Women and Child Development minister, Pramila Mallik.
