Bhubaneswar: State-owned PSUs should infuse professionalism and business acumen in order to make their mark, Chief Secretary B K Patnaik said on Thursday.

Patnaik, who was reviewing performances of Memorandum of Understanding which were signed by PSUs, asked them to expand their business operations to the open market and not depend only on captive purchase by the government. "Present yourself as corporate bodies and not as mere extension wings of administrative departments," he told the PSU chiefs.

A total of 17 PSUs had signed MoUs with different departments through the Department of Public Enterprise during 2011-12. Their number increased to 22 in 2012-13 and to 24 during 2013-14 so far, Patnaik said. The performance of each PSU was evaluated on the basis of their fulfilling the targets and achievements laid down in the MoUs.

Development Commissioner Jugal Kishore Mohapatra, who was also present at the meeting, suggested that PSUs develop mechanisms for professionalising their management at higher levels.

Each PSU has also been asked to prepare its own programme for Enterprise Resource Planning for scaling up their activities in the open market.
