New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission on Thursday issued notices to Odisha government on reported death of a woman allegedly due to starvation last month in Jajpur district in the state.
 
Taking suo motu cognisance of a media report, NHRC asked the Chief Secretary and District Magistrate of Jajpur to submit a report on death of a 35-year-old woman on January 29 due to starvation.
 
The District Administration, according to the report, was approached for help but there was no response, the commission said in a press release.
 
The Commission observed the report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of the Right to Life of the victim.
 
According to the report, the woman used to stay with her father at Kotpur gram panchayat under Dharamshala block of Jajpur district. She and her father had to starve frequently as he could not work due to his advancing age. The father had approached the administration for assistance but without any results.
 
The woman was without food for four days at a stretch.
 
The local Sarpanch had informed the BDO over phone regarding the starving family, before she succumbed to death, it said.
 
The deceased did not get any medical attention either from Kotpur or Dharamshala Centres, the release said.
